11 to 14, The early ‘teen’ years

The high school years, a tough time for all involved! It’s a time when physical activity is so important as they grow into their ‘new’ bodies. Unfortunately it’s also the time when a huge number give up team sports like football and rugby. It’s a time when self confidence can plummet to worrying lows, and anxiety levels soar. If only their was an activity that could keep them physically active, build self confidence and social skills, keep them physically fit and provide stress relief in a time period when schools are piling on the pressure relentlessly. Well there is, and it’s here!

Why Kickboxing?

No ‘uniforms’, no ridiculous ceremonials, no bowing and having to call your coach Sensei or Sifu, just mutual respect for one another, and a feeling of belonging. Unlike traditional martial arts, kickboxing has no universal set of techniques that are set in stone from ancient times! It takes the best and most effective striking techniques from Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, Boxing, Savate and Muay Thai. It is without doubt the most complete stand up ‘martial art’ and although there are many rule sets, which can differ greatly, the concept remains the same throughout.

We focus on the K1 rule set, but also train Muay Thai clinch work, enabling our students to compete in multiple disciplines if they wish. It also translates very well to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) if that is an ambition for the future.

Going further

Our regular classes are mainly non-contact, with the occasional semi-contact drill thrown in. We concentrate on the basics, in this sport you can go a long, long way just with the basics! But sooner or later you may want to take it a little further, maybe try your hand at sparring and maybe even compete. Let us know if that is your aim and we’ll let you know when you are ready to take the next step and invite you to the sparring class.

Class Structure

In this age group students learn to train together, holding hand pads and Thai pads for one another. There are no cliques, advanced students help beginners, knowing they are building the very best training partners for the future.

Warm up

Including skipping, footwork patterns and stretching.

Core technique

Working on punches, kicks and defence techniques on pads, bags or Dutch drilling from our number system.

Game

We have a variety of games we like to play in class, from combat tag variations that are a pre-requisite to sparring to dodge ball and prison break for a fun end to the session.

We operate a pay as you go policy for your first four classes at the discounted rate of £5 per session.

After that, to continue at a discounted rate we ask for monthly payment in advance by direct debit if possible. If you want to continue paying weekly the per session cost rises to £7.50. Click here for full details
Yes, we run a comprehensive grading system approved by the BMABA. Gradings are held 3 times a year. Students will be told the criteria for their grade in class, not everyone will grade everytime!
This is the right class for them! We go by school year, not age. Your child will move up to the next class in September when they begin High School.
Shorts or jogging bottoms/leggings, and a t-shirt. Also bring a drink, preferably water, in a re-useable bottle.
We have gloves they can borrow BUT they don’t smell particularly great! We recommend getting your own gloves, they don’t have to cost a lot, £12 to £15. You’ll need a minimum of 10oz gloves. You can buy these from Amazon or Ebay, makes like Farabi, MaxX and Lion are good quality and very reasonably priced. Please DO NOT buy the Lonsdale gloves from Sports Direct, they are poor quality and offer no protection or wrist support.
Please don’t arrive any more than a few minutes before class begins as you will be waiting outside for the previous class to leave. The gym is small and some parents stay for our younger class, there is no room for you to wait inside for your class to begin.
Only if they are in the same age bracket, if not they will be in their own age group, we have age ranges for a reason and we will not compromise the class structure to accommodate students of a different age.
No, we do not offer free trials. We have a waiting list for most classes and our prices are exceptionally low. You will see other martial arts schools constantly using paid advertising on social media, offering free trials to gain new members as they struggle to attract and retain students. When spaces do open up for any of our classes they tend to be filled very quickly.
